Tom Shanti
Tom Shanti is a Midlands based yoga teacher and musician who has studied and practiced Tabla under Ustad Sarva Sabri ji for over 20 years performing at venues such as the MAC theatre .
He had studied Classical Hindustani vocals for over 10 years under various Gurus such as Sri Malalayaban Chatterjee of Kirana Gharana . He currently trains under Prabhat Rao of Gwalior Gharana and has performed at venues such as Chinmaya Mission , The Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan (Institute of Indian Culture) and at the Harrow Arts Centre. He is a multi instrumentalist playing Harmonium and guitar in yoga and musical events and specialises in Bhajan & Kirtan having presented them in Hindu Temples, Yoga studios and at concerts and music festivals .
He will introduce and explain some of the key components and terminology of Classical Indian music such as Swara , Raga and Taal . He will introduce and demonstrate some essential Talas such a teentaal (16 beat cycle ) & Ektaal (12 beat ). He will introduce some popular classical Raags such as Bhairav and Bhimpalasi and sing alaap, Sthayi and Antara sections , plus additional vistars and taans and explain these and other key terms relating to structure of a ‘ bandish ‘ or classical composition . He will also share a bhajan and / or Kirtan composition in a specific classical raag and time cycle (ie Raag Malkauns in Bhajantaal) .
He will demonstrate various traditional instruments such as Tabla, Harmonium and Tanpura
