John Hewerdine - Unitarians in India
John Hewerdine “Unitarians in India “
John Hewerdine is a British Unitarian who gave up secure employment designing, producing and marketing Manchester textiles in 1967. As a professional photogapher, John travel overland to India, sleeping in an old ex-Bradford ambulance on his travels. Whilst there, John enjoyed the hospitality of a wide range of religious groups including Hindus, Jains, Buddhists, Sikhs, Muslims and Christians, staying in their homes, their gurdwaras, their mosques and their temples. From a liberal Christian upbringing as a Unitarian, this two years experience opened his mind to the breadth of religious riches, from which he had been sheltered in his cosy, western early lifestyle.
In Meghalaya, John stayed with Annie Margaret Barr, and English Unitarian Minister and devotee of Mahatma Gandhi. As a pacifist, John was delighted by experiencing something of Gandhi’s philosophy, clearly illustrated by Margaret’s new-found lifestyle. She lived her faith, opening her home to the waifs and strays of the Khasi and Jaintia hills and enjoying the Green philosophy of their own tribal religion and values. He was particularly impressed by the fullness of those people’ lives, folk with so little in material possessions, and yet such a richness of outlook.
