Macclesfield Online Gatherings – 6/12

Macclesfield Online Gatherings - 06/12

Dear friends

Please see below the details of our gatherings this week.

Tuesday 7th December 12.30 – 1.30 pm Tao on Tuesday in Chapel
Join us for our meditation on the Tao Te Ching. We read a short passage, enjoy a time of shared silence for meditation and then share our reflections on the text. All welcome.

Tuesday 7th December, 7 – 7.45 pm: Advent Centering Prayer Meditation on Zoom
Listening with the heart: we will hear a piece of poetry on the advent theme of peace and listen for a word or phrase that speaks to us. We will then meditate on our sacred word or phrase using the simple practice of centering prayer, which originated with Father Thomas Keating, a Trappist monk who was inspired by both Christian contemplative monasticism and Zen Buddhism. Led by Mark Hutchinson. No previous experience of meditation is required. All welcome.

Kate (she/her) is minister with the Unitarian congregation in Bury, East Lancashire, where she has been for nearly five years since moving from Norwich. She loves Jesus and Gaia and celebrates whichever festivals make her heart and soul sing, which allows for a lot of celebration. She is proudly Queer. Her desert island book would be a compilation of the entire Chalet School series, and for music she would take everything by Steeleye Span, although she’d pretend she’d take everything by Telemann. She is a proud dog-bore, likes making jam, and gets sad if she doesn’t see the sea a few times a year. Her favourite hymn book is the purple one, and she loves the psalms.

You can watch the full talk here:

Thursday 9th December, 7 – 8.15 pm: Heart and Soul on Zoom
Heart and Soul is a contemplative spiritual gathering in which you can take time to reflect on life in the company of others. Each session follows a regular pattern, including readings and music, time for guided prayers of gratitude, compassion for others, self-reflection, and silent meditation. Led by Laura Dobson. All welcome. This week’s theme is ‘Hand Made.’

‘Handwork is often a form of prayer. Building models, knitting and stitchery, painting, baking bread, throwing pots, weaving — all can become a form of prayer. I have a vivid memory of the scene from the movie Gandhi in which Gandhi removes himself from the tumultuous activities in his quest for justice and sits in solitude spinning his own cotton.’ — Jane Vennard
